Does anyone here know how to use MAME?

Yes Mame, the emulator. I'm trying to start a 4 player co-op game but I'm having problems. I can't get all of my friends in at once. It's only 3 of us but I can only get 2 of us in a game at a time. I made sure the roms I was using were 4 player. We all have player 1 controls set but only 2 of us can work at a time. Is there things that we need to configure based on our position?

usually a vague answer on wikipedia means it covers most of the subject matter.
in this case, mame probably runs several of said systems.

It's as specific as it can be.  MAME emulates a large number of machines, no specific models.
