I've richarded around with it a bit, but I just can't get the hang of it.

I atleast know how to patterns, mixer, and what not.

Try SunVox. You can create the same sounds except with a far more minimalist interface and you have a variety of "pure" instruments that can be hooked up to effects. Basically like a modular synthesizer with a tracker style.
