It'd be really cool if players had the ability to scavenge out in the map for randomly generated scrap, which could be used to design and build their own gear.

It's been mentioned more than once. If someone would describe Firefly's setting (transportation, settlements, environments, social behavior) to me, I'd be happy to draw inspiration from it.
