Is tap water safe to drink?

I thought it was based on whether your used to it or not, if I drink tapwater here then I'm fine, in fact I find bottled water tastes funny. But if I drink tapwater anywhere else, say Bangladesh, Spain, Italy, I vomit like there's no tomorrow.
