Monitor says "out of range" when i start up Metro 2033

so ya i'm pretty sure that means it starts up in a resolution that my monitor can't support, it think the limit on this monitor is 1280 x 1024 but anyway, how do i fix this


and no i'm not getting a new monitor so don't start that stuff

couldn't find \4A Games\

however i did find the user.cfg in my steam folder but i can't open it with winrar

As far as I know, Metro starts in your native resolution, even on first launch. It could be a fault with your monitor.

well when i went to that .cfg the settings were something like 1640 x 1024 or something, my native settings are 1280 x 1024 also my monitor is a few years old

A quick Google search later and I found this:

1. First of all, most of the users report on the forums that they get a black screen when they try to launch the game. This might be a DirectX related problem which can be fixed if you turn DX to 10. Here’s how to do it:

Browse to your this folder in your Steam path: Steam\userdata\(user id)\43110\remote (With your own user id.) In that folder you should find the Metro user.cfg file that the steam cloud saves locally. Open it and change the fullscreen value to off, then save the file.

Completely quit and restart Steam.exe so it grabs the updates from the user.cfg, and launch Metro. It should launch in windowed mode. Go to the options menu, and change the Direct X value to 10, accept and quit.

Open the user.cfg file again, and change the fullscreen value back to on. Completely restart Steam again and launch the game.

2. If the tech-suggested trick doesn’t work or you get the black screen after you use Alt+Tab to switch from a window to another, you might wish to try Alt+Tab a couple more times and wait just a little bit – the game should start.

3. If the game keeps crashing, try searching for the file content.upk0 in the game’s install folder and rename it then restart the game.

funny thing is...i found the same thing before i made the topic...didn't work...

Find/make a shortcut, then right click it, select properties at the bottom, and find the box that says target. example: C:/programfiles/steam/steamapps/metro/metro.exe <-- (don't type that in it won't work) and then at the end of it put a space and then -window. example:
C:/programfiles/steam/steamapps/metro/metro.exe -window

Idk if that'll work on newer games but try it out :P

For steam games, you would use the launch options dialog in the game's properties (found in the library) to do this.
