Author Topic: Every time I quit Oblivion it refuses to stop running  (Read 2306 times)

I've been having trouble with Oblivion lately, whenever I'm done playing and quit, the game doesn't actually stop. Queue the "I can close gates of Oblivion but I can't close the game!" jokes. The game window closes, but Steam still shows me playing and the process is still running according to the task manager. This wouldn't really be a problem if it weren't for a few things: First, I can't kill Oblivion.exe. No matter how many times I choose to end the process it sticks around. Even quitting Steam (through ending the Steam process, as closing it normally tells me to close Oblivion) doesn't do anything. Second, it seems to still be using all the resources it requires to run. As a result, everything is slower and for whatever reason YouTube videos only have audio.

The only solution I've found is restarting my computer, but I'd prefer not do that every time I finish playing. I imagine my nostalgia trip won't last too much longer and it will cease to be an issue, but it would be nice to get this fixed.

I do have a few mods installed, but most of them are unofficial patches and I've seen the game close properly multiple times with them there before so I doubt that's the problem.

Have you already done basic troubleshooting (restarting your computer, ensuring drivers are up-to-date?)
YouTube would only have audio because the video acceleration is already being used by a different program, certain GPUs have it that way and I'm not sure you can turn it off. You can turn off hardware acceleration for flash, but that's not a good workaround.

I had this exact same issue!

I tried everything including disabling ALL mods and expansions, no luck. My only way of fixing it was uninstalling and re-installing. Try verifying the game from Steam, and if all fails do what I did, just delete local content and reinstall.

the only way i know how to get rid of that showing you're playing is to open another game (i use notepad) and it'll go away after closing notepad since that happens to me sometimes
otherwise im not sure i can only offer help for that :-(

Yes.

Verified and nothing was missing, guess I'll try reinstalling. Hopefully I don't have to put all the mods back in, that was a pain in the ass. I think OBMM should keep it all together.

Steam and Windows believe the game is open, so that doesn't work.
