I wanted to modify Windows 7 Minesweeper with different textures/sounds, so I Googled around. What I ended up with was a Wiki page listing 10 versions of Windows Minesweeper, all the way back to a beta from July 1990 which was thought to be lost by the original creator of Windows Minesweeper for many years:

I've tried running it with all compatibility settings on, and DOSBox. I can't find information informing me of other methods I could try. DOSBox says it works with 1992 Minesweeper, but it doesn't specify the required settings for it. I assume it'd work under the 1992 settings.
Edit: Ah, to run old Minesweeper games, you need to run Windows 3.1x on DOSBox:
