Author Topic: Wanting to swap out my mobo for a different mobo - I hath a question  (Read 552 times)

Alright i'm currently using this mobo: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-fm2a75pro4
With this cpu: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-ad560kwohjbox
I'm wanting to upgrade to the following:
Mobo: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z77extreme4
Cpu: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80637i53570k

My question is will I need to reinstall my OS to use the new motherboard? I really would prefer not having to reinstall my OS and programs. Can't I just uninstall my motherboard drivers, install the new motherboard drivers, and then swap out the motherboards? Please provide a detailed answer. Thanky.

Do it just do it. I don't think you would need to re-install anything

Not unless you're switching your hardrive.
If you plan to also switch your GPU then uninstall the drivers first.

All the other comp parts will be used with this motherboard. I've been googling this for the past hour and I've come up with answers telling me that I need to reinstall my OS because the mobo's use different chipsets and for compatibility issues.

you don't need to but it is highly recommended to do it anyways.

i never upgrade mobos. i start with the best available and upgrade the rest over time.
then when mobo is truly shotty, i get a new comp

I really should have started out with the intel motherboard. My bad.

Back your important stuff up then do it. What's the worse that could happen? If it fails just reinstall your OS again.

You can change CPU and Mobo without having to reinstall your OS. Try and see if there is a uninstall driver section on ur current mobo and if there isn't the either way I think your fine. You will need to manually uninstall some stuff such as the audio driver if ts different in the new mobo but other than that I think ur fine.  (U will need to install the drivers for the new mobo, remember that)

I think I remember seeing software that could uninstall my mobo drivers for me. Question, do I need to install the new mobo drivers before swapping out the mobo? And wouldn't windows automatically install the new motherboard drivers by itself?

asrock is infamous for making faulty motherboards, but you shouldnt need to reinstall windows.

driver sweeper?

and no, but you get a cd with the mobo with the drivers.

windows is on the harddrive. you can use your windows just by plugging the HD into any computer.

you may have to reinstall/update a ton of drivers though

Ok lets come to a conclusion, do I?
A: Simply swap out mobo's an install the new drivers
B: Attempt to uninstall the old mobo drivers before swapping them out
C: Format my hard drive, swap out the mobo's, reinstall OS (I loathe this answer)
