Depends on the game really.

Resident Evil used to be the same category as Silent Hill when both started out: survival horror. However, Resident Evil has evolved into a mutant hack and slash fest that digresses from the previous genre. Silent Hill has become a series that lost its charms after the first few games, however the fourth one did perk my interest.

In terms of gameplay: Resident Evil

In terms of replayability: Resident Evil

In terms of music: Silent Hill

Best SH: 4, again.

Verdict: Personally, I like a game where I feel empowered, not helpless. And Resident Evil tends to that. But if I ever need a game to have me stuffting my jeans, wishing I hadn't used those bullets, then Silent Hill. Overall, Resident Evil is better (despite capcom slowly killing it :((()

well 1-3, the newer ones are garbage.

silent hill are the scary games though

There's some good in the later Resident Evil games, despite it running into a "wooo action action EXPLOSIONSSS" genre and zombies using guns, but I pretty much enjoyed 1-3.

I only like Silent Hill 1 and 2 to be honest :\.

Silent Hill because they didn't make a game for the GBA like Resident Evil did ;-;

Jokes aside I'd say Resident Evil because Silent Hill feels like it's degrading in quality. If you haven't played Revelations, give it a try on the 3DS, but if you haven't played Silent Hill: Book of Memories, it's better not to.
