You do know that there is a smarter system than throwing solar panels in giant installations in the oceans?

Solar Roadsways. Look it up.

Sounds like a repairman's man's worst nightmare to me.

nuclear reactors remain one of the most powerful sources of relatively clean energy for the foreseeable future. fusion is also slowly approaching its energy singularity so that'll be pretty great.

ya they would get so dirty so quickly that they would need to be cleaned and broken panels would need to be replaced atleast twice a week. that would require to many people for it to ever be cleaned regularly and correctly.

It could be worse. They could build solar panels hanging over active volcanic vents, or hanging over some sort of windy bluff in the mountains.

i could make so much money stealing these.

I don't think my tires would hook solar panels as well as they hook pavement, thumbs down from me.

I'm pretty sure they generate electricity in a different way than normal solar panels. I remember reading about it somewhere, still didn't seem like a great idea

Unfortunately not. Most comes from burning coal or oil. A large portion also comes from natural gas, which is better than the former two but inferior to nuclear.
Yeah and it's the worst thing ever, society needs to lay off the fossil fuels.

yea dude forget fossil fuels who needs em anyway. ill tell you who: the rich 1%ers so they can drive around in hummers. forget em. imo we'd be better off as an agrarian society.

do you remember tsarist russia or the confederate south from your history classes. those are good examples of agrarian societies. both were destroyed because they were outdated for their time.

industrialization is the future. your country cannot hope to survive if its power is built on the food it puts in peoples stomachs rather than the bullets it can put in the enemy's heads. farming is no longer a viable model for society cause agrarian nations are easily conquered. industrialized nations are not.

the "rich 1%ers" are prevalent in all society models, industrial or not. in an agrarian society u would have your plantation owners and mansion holding-millionares who oversee the massive farms. just like in the confederate south. in an industrial society you instead have your company presidents and real estate giants.

societies will always have rich and poor people. even communist USSR had rich and poor people. the government was rich and the people were poor.

also lets think here for a moment: how the heck would america work today if it was agrarian?

youve got people living all over a massive country
and youve got all these farms
you need the power of industry to keep everything running. agrarian societies worked ok back when the biggest threats people faced were arrows and swords, and the communities covered only a very small area and goods were easy to transport.
but its now 2014 not the middle ages. you have a large country that requires a massive industrialized transportation system to get food to everyone if you wanna feed em. how are you gonna keep those trains, trucks and aircraft running? you need fuel, and lots of it. where do you get it? from oil drilling and coal mining. if the tracks for the train are electric, you need a power plant to give the jump to that 3rd rail. so at this point you need even more fuel, to keep the power plants running. you need all this fuel as well to get the transport ships working if your "agrarian" society is gonna be able to trade your crops with other countries. you need the machinery to make crops plentiful and quickly enough to keep a good food supply (btw those all require power too). you have to use powerful machines such as 16-inch guns, rockets and jet planes to keep enemy nations at bay. you literally NEED the fossil fuels to keep the country going. there is no viable alternative. u cant power cars efficiently, safely or as compact-ly with solar, coal or nuclear.

*snicker*
insert sarcasm quotes around that.

Nuke everything.

Radioactive power is the way to go.
