7-zip is the best compression utility, since it is not only free, but open-source, and supports a wide range of file formats.

and if anything it's probably better to make addons with because you don't have to deal with winrar's sluggishness

If you're interested in making weapons or vehicles, you'll want to grab some software called Blender. You can Google Blender noob to pro if you need an in depth tutorial. And there are plenty of addon tutorials for Blender on the forums.

You can also compress files with the LZMA2 algorithm with 7-zip.

Also, this isn't even true. I've helped a few modders get started myself, they were clueless on their own.

That's like saying, "The only way to learn how to make bread is by figuring out the recipe and process on your own."

2.5 years ago, without Pacnet's patient help, I would have never made all of the add-ons I have.
