Author Topic: External RTB-Inspired BLiD Lookup  (Read 1963 times)

BLiD Lookup was an especially usefully feature of the RTB forums, it came in handy whenever you needed to
get the BLiD for a problem user and could not in game. Now, i know what you all might say, "just lookup the forum profie of the problem user." That doesn't always work, besides that, a users forum name and in game name might be different.

So, i got to thinking. If people have made online archives of the addons origionally listed in the rtb forums, why can't we do something similar with BLiD lookup?

Because it requires making and maintaining a database, you would either have to make people download an add-on to get their name / bl_id or constantly going around on servers with a client mod and updating the database. It's more than just slapping a few hundred RTB download links into a website.

This only works if you get a lot of supporters. The RTB one worked because basically every server and client was running RTB. Clients would send their own names, and popular servers running RTB would send the few ones that didn't have RTB. You can't just "make a new one" unless you can get many people to install your add-on on their servers to send info to your server.

Another way to do this would be with access to the auth database... you could go ask badspot to add a small and simple API for it and he wouldn't even answer.

Currently I think that http://blockland.gambsy.co.uk/idlookup.php is the best one out. There may be another.
