Author Topic: Linksys Router Help  (Read 493 times)

So I have this linksys router which was working perfectly before the broadband problem, blah blah. Long story short, I now have 12mbps but the router will not work as a gateway. If I use my PC as a gateway and the router reroutes the connections to my PC, it works fine. My PC is in no condition to run 24/7 so I need to have this fixed. The router's model is WRT54G2, my ISP is Fibertel. I've tried Automatic DHCP and Static IP using the data I obtained when my PC was acting like a gateway but no success. Help please.

Es una mierda pero es lo mejor que tenemos.

It's highly unlikely you need to use your PC as a gateway in a home network, nor would it be wise to. Someone probably just forgeted the settings up on the router, hold the reset button for a good 5 to 10 seconds.

I did that before posting here. If I use the router as the gateway, it will not connect any system to the internet and the PC light on the modem would just blink. The Default Gateway is blank according to ipconfig and Renew Lease will not get the router a new IP address, a DNS address nor a gateway address. It will stay as "0.0.0.0". If I use my PC as the gateway, everything is filled. I've attempted to copy the data from ipconfig /all when my PC acted as a gateway and put it in my router but when I set my router as the gateway, it will give a DNS lookup failure for any system connected.

If you connect to the WAN port of the router and it isn't blinking like it's supposed to there could be a problematic physical jack/port involved.

I would reset the router to default, run through a basic config with it, reboot the modem, and get on the phone with the ISP to see if there are any addresses that need to be configured for DNS or static WAN route.

Phoning the ISP is out of the question. When I connect the ethernet to my router's WAN port, the internet light turns on like it normally would but no data would be sent/received from the modem nor does the modem's lights turn on. When I plug the ethernet into my PC, it works like it should. It's not the cable.

I resetted the router twice now, I've followed three different tutorials, one with the same outer and no luck. What puzzles me is why does it work with my PC as a gateway but not with my router as a gateway.

I would be interested to know the following:

If you plug directly from modem -- PC, what are your address settings resolved to? IPv4, DHCP(status), DNS, Gateway.
If you take the router and disable all DHCP and routing functionality, and plug it from Modem -- LAN Router port (Not WAN) and plug the PC into the router LAN switch as well, what happens and what are addresses resolved as?
Model of your modem?

IP conflicts and doesn't let me access the router.

Try browsing to this address while connected to the modem in a way that you find suitable.

Some other people state issues with your particular modem/router combo online. If possible definitely get another router but I'm not saying that the only way.

It times out.

This modem/router combo was working perfectly before the fiber cable was accidentally cut on the street and having upgraded to 12mbps.
