Headphone sound not working on ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS74 Gaming laptop, win 8.1

So suddenly this morning when I go to use my computer, I realize the sound isn't working for the headphones. I thought maybe it was just the specific heatphone set I was wearing, so I tried some other ones around my house and none of them worked either. Without any headphones plugged in I can hear whatever's playing through the computer speakers just fine, but when I plug in headphones, no sound will come through them. I already checked the volume mixer and it is turned up high enough, and it's not muted.

well obviously something is forgeted up with the jack.
perhaps there's too much dirt, try cleaning your jack out

the jack is fine

my dad somehow managed to solve the problem by closing the laptop and opening it. apparently it must have thought it was in sleep mode so the sound wasnt playing.
