Author Topic: SJWs have found a new thing to complain about: Cultural Appropriation  (Read 811 times)

With Halloween just around the corner SJWs of Tumblr have found ways to start arguments cultural appropriation. Pretty much this sums it up

Uhh, they always complained about this

If white people use other culture's stuff, it's cultural appropriation
If other culture's use white people's stuff, it's cultural imperialism, still white people's fault

Cultural appropriation has been around for a long time, and the fundamental belief in it encourages racism and segregation (By restricting what you can and cannot do based on your race, ethnicity, class, country of birth, etc).

It's really nothing new, but I still hate it.

this stuff is basically the lifeblood of reverse-racism

I think you all can take a guess where I stand on this

Preventing what they see as cultural appropriation requires full isolation and segregation of cultures and nationalities, which will undoubtedly lead to discrimination of other groups outside a specific society. Non-whites have also appropriated aspects of other non-white cultures, the first example to come to mind being the written Japanese language borrowing heavily from Chinese.

In America specifically, the belief that others cannot participate in aspects of black American culture is one of the factors that leads to there even being such a segregated separatist black culture in the first place.

I wouldn't expect slacktivist SJWs to be able to think critically at the first grade level that requires to realize though.

if the binding of cultures is tribal then america is inherently tribal

that's basically what they believe

It's not super cut and dry, IMO. The vast majority of the 'cultural appropriation' that people complain about is just the usual kind of hashtag advocacy bullstuff. However, you've also got people who name their sports teams the 'redskins', which most people would probably agree is a pretty disrespectful way of trying to use Native American culture.

I feel like the whole point of culture is that it's shared traditions and ideas. And cultures disseminate and mix with eachother, what is the problem with that?

However, yeah there are cases where "cultural appropriation" exists. Like blatantly disrespecting other cultures.

I thought the "redskins" debacle was because redskins is antiquated and the idea of making an ethnic group a mascot is kind of dehumanizing.

I thought that's what 'cultural appropriation' was supposed to mean. Disrespectful adoption of culture?

Well what part of the culture did they adopt? I guess their mascot had a headdress on but I feel like had the Redskins just removed that from their mascot their detractors would not be satisfied

that's the definition, but the term Redskins was never Native American culture to begin with; iirc it started as a derogatory term for the group

Ah, okay. So maybe not cultural appropriation. There's probably not a better word for it.
