You can get really far with calm and frenzy.
The system works really well with sneaking, so you can sneak around a group of enemies and then get them to fight each other.
If they suspect you just calm them down and get to somewhere you can hide.

Or work it in with being an assassin.

The best part about Illusion is casting Calm on an enemy then sneaking behind them and dealing 30x damage with a dagger
