Author Topic: Affordable Care Act [rant?]  (Read 1077 times)

i'll start by saying i'm only posting this to see if i can get someone to respond with an opposing situation in which the ACA helped a family or individual here on blf, i'm writing a college essay on the topic and i have to provide both opinions/situations.

my grandparents have lived of a fixed retirement income for nearly 10 years now and they both have various lung problems caused by being born in a generation that didn't know cigarettes were actually terrible for you.  their income has been the exact same for 10 years, they have paid off their house and everything else however recently they've been slowly exhausting their savings just in order to stay alive.  just on one of their numerous prescription medications the co-pay from my grandfathers retirement health care to the co-pay with the new ACA the price has increased 400%.  a $30 medication previously now cost them $140 out of pocket.  this is one of the more acceptable numbers.  their average medication price increase is ~500%.  to me it's a very scary situation because if they had not had any savings or help they would simple of gone without medication causing them many problems.  i understand the premise of the ACA and i hate to be one sided about topics like this but it seems so ridiculous that the prices would increase that much for a family of 2 that lives off of a fixed income.  but anyways, post your thoughts below

is obamacare really responsible for rising prices in medication? I thought it was a different source of economic throttling

Didn't the CEO of some company raise prices on essential medication to the tune of about 5000% or something?
I remember it being an excessively high markup.

America's healthcare system is a piece of crap. We need a single payer system, end of story.

which is why I'm questioning the relevancy of obamacare in this

I'm pretty sure it's just drug manufacturers who are hiking the prices

and of course obama vetoes the recent obamacare repeal bill that passed congress

They can afford to raise their prices ridiculously because the government will pay for it regardless

the point of health insurance is to not pay the full price of healthcare, because of this problem.  however the price of the medications my grandparents has not increased at all.  just the co-pay for their insurance has gone up, so my grandparents are paying more of the cost of the medications versus with their old health insurance.

what i'm saying is my grandpa had perfect health insurance through the company he worked over 40 years for, but because of the ACA everyone has to get their healthcare through the government, not privatized insurance companies.  so he HAD to get rid of his perfect healthcare and pay more for his meds, otherwise he would be fined every year he didn't.

My family has been damaged a good deal by ObamaCare too. My dad's paying four times as much on our health insurance now under the new ACA laws.

OP is a reason why you shouldn't smoke. Honestly, I know many kids who have parents who are battling smoking-related illnesses and then decide to take up smoking. I mean, how stupid can you be? If you see your parent is dying from that same thing, why take it up? This is what you call an idiot. Hopefully all states raise the smoking age and tax the stuff out of cigarettes like we do here in NY.

It helps me personally because I can stay on my parent's healthcare plan until I'm 26. My medication would cost ~$3000 every month without health care, we can pay ~$20 for it on our health plan.

This is just flat out wrong (by wrong I mean untrue), sorry.
