There was a topic on this in like 2008 or something, back when it was in early development. (This game is mostly done except for the Xen levels, but there is still a ton of awesome gameplay anyways)

Black Mesa is a HL1 remake in the source/half life 2 engine. It's on steam right now for $10.
I highly recommend this! It has great graphics and textures. It has all the same levels as half life 1 except a whole lot more detailed. You get to enjoy the half life 1 experience with the source engine physics and graphics. The music is absolutely stunning, I am fairly certain that the music is done by a man who work(ed) at valve on the half life games.

I currently am on, "On The Rail" chapter. I have really enjoyed the game so far, it does not feel like a mod. If you want reviews better than mine, check the steam reviews.

i'm not paying 20 dollars for a game i already have

i'm not paying 20 dollars for a game i already have twice

Can confirm that the game looks and plays nice. There's the occasional issue with respawning after death causing me to lose a bit of progress every now and then, but other than that it's definitely worth $10.

I already have hl1, but this is a whole new experience and a nostalgia trip. It's not just like playing a shiny hl1, the whole feel of the game is new and fresh, but still keeping the hl1 atmosphere.

Yeah that's autosave, I recommend just saving after you do anything difficult.

how come the game costs money now, i remember it being free

you can still download the free version in moddb

the steam version is actually updated though and will have the xen chapter whenever it comes out

edit:

Pretty sure it was free, or at least they said it was going to be free early on in development, but this is definitely worth 10 dollars. I'm glad to support the developers, a lot of work seems to have gone into it. Especially for a mod.

like almost every full game that uses the source engine, it started out as a free half life 2 mod
other examples include gmod and the stanley parable
