the training officers go through to handle firearms is more extensive then a firearm safety course to obtain your hunting license or something similar.
The only "extension" that police training offers to gun safety are far beyond the parameters of failing to clear a gun at a civilian demonstration lmfao. It's seriously not that complicated. I really don't understand what you're expecting to change here. Maybe we should tell police officers "hey don't accidentally shoot people" twice a week instead of once.
anyone that is stupid enough to not unload their gun that they are pointing and firing at a civilian in a public dry-fire demonstration should NEVER be hired as a police officer. accidents happen but this is blatant stupidity. i know 10 year olds that have better judgement when it comes to handling guns then this officer did
Nobody is arguing that this particular guy didn't make an immensely stupid mistake for which he will probably pay for dearly, but it's a stretch to go from this accident to "all cops are incompetent"
you would be right to say i don't have any solid ideas on how to improve the training, but i feel like most rational people would agree that whatever they're getting now isn't nearly enough. hopefully, after more attention is brought to the subject, police forces will actually be forced to do something about it.
Attention has been brought to it. It generally ends in most departments not having money to train a cop multiple years to administer parking tickets and arrest people who are too high on bud to move. But personally, I agree with you that cops should have more training. Everybody, in every profession, deserves more training, as all human beings have an infinite capacity to learn and master their trade. Unfortunately, it
still costs money, and people who think cops are out to get them aren't likely to agree to further funding kek
There are countries that have lengthier and more expensive training programs, who pay their cops higher salaries on average. Like mine for instance. Spoiler alert:
they still make mistakes. Less mistakes, but your return generally reflects what you invest.
i propose a nationwide police force reform, militarizing them and training them to become the ultimate right wing death squad officers
But what happens when the ultimate right wing death squad officers make a mistake? I propose 150 years of cybernetically augmented gun safety repetition.
