Author Topic: Is Mirrors Edge catalyst any good?  (Read 1136 times)

Planning on buying it if it goes on sale. I loved the artstyle of the first game but I felt the game left much to be desired. My biggest question (that I haven't been able to confirm from any reviews or gameplay) is since the game is open world, can you go down to street level or is it ONLY buildings? Because all I've seen so far in gameplay is just parkouring on buildings.

Also give me pros and cons of the game etc, what platform is best (planning on buying for Xbone since my PC has no storage) and all that stuff.

No, it's only rooftops and a couple interiors, sadly. There are a few ground-level and some below-ground areas, but there aren't many and I think a few of them are mission-exclusive. I'd say the PC is the best way to go simply because of mouse and keyboard controls (kind of a matter of opinion but when you need to make sudden adjustments you won't regret it), but I can see how the recommended specs being a GTX 970 and 16GB of RAM can scare away people.

It's great fun but the skill tree kills that enjoyment most of the time. It shouldn't have one and there's no real reason to have it whatsoever. At the beginning of the game even some of the familiar abilities from the first game, such as using Q to turn around and rolling after a long fall, are locked behind this tree. You only earn skill points through main story missions and a few side missions, and, in some cases, the story forces you to buy certain upgrades (example: grappling hook for later in the game).

Story's alright. It's the same idea as the first except different. I'd say more but I'll let you figure it out because spoilers.

Blah. I wanted an open world Mirrors Edge for the specific reason of being at ground level and finding my own paths to the rooftops for missions. If you've ever played GMOD darkRP as a messenger you will understand what I'm talking about.

I enjoyed it a lot.
The free roam aspect is quite fun, although it is broken down into areas, and the paths from one area to another are quite limited so if you're travelling far you will find that you regularly go through the same areas.

The story is pretty good, if fairly predictable, and it introduced/reinvented a rather interesting world. But it does leave you wanting a bit more.

The side missions can be fun, but also a pain. Most are races against the clock but they only have like 2 seconds of leeway for you, so you may find yourself replaying each one several times as you work out the quickest route and scratch off milliseconds.

The online stuff is a bit lame. You unlock banners and trails, but only your friends see them, if you have any that play.

Overall, if you liked the original you'll probably enjoy this just for being more freerunning. But you may find the innovations are a bit lackluster.

imo the original was much better, instead of the stuffty futuristic overdone dystopian city we see a lot now it was actually just like, a normal city if that makes sense. oh and the music

It's on sale on PC for 15 dollars. Whats the optimization like? Have they fixed it within the past few months?
