FPS: Far Cry. $9.99 on Steam.
RTS: Starcraft. Don't know how much but a lot of people say it's the best thing ever and if you don't have it you hate it.

RTS: Supreme Commander is so good, it has actually ruined my experiences with other RTS games.

For instance, I was playing Age of Empires 3 the other day and I got really annoyed that you can't even do simple things like set which way a unit faces for move orders, or set cannons to be defensive.

Supreme Commander doesn't have as many different unit types as some RTS games, but the depth of the controls and the well balanced nature of the game make it one of the best RTS games ever made.

Starcraft-You can get both the original, and the Brood War Expansion for $20 at most stores.

if you like shooters with vehicles, any of the battlefields are great.

RTS, get Age of empires 2 (NOT 3! it sucks)
or some of the old CnC games

There is actually an interesting pattern between RTS's and their 3rd installments.

Age of Empires 3 was received lukewarmly by the press and poorly by the fans
Empire Earth 3 was eaten alive by the press (3.5/10 on gamespot) and was despised by the fans of the series.
Command and Conquer 3 was also received lukewarmly by the press and many fans weren't happy.

i was so angry at how terrible empire earth 3 was, i actually tossed the cd across the room. its still behind my fridge

I loved the first Empire Earth game, thought "meh" of the second entry and thank god I read some reviews and tried the demo first before buying the 3rd edition. Perhaps the worst sequel in a game series ever.

They forgeted up everything from the graphical design and performance to the AI pathfinding and unit formations.
