I got the demo but I haven't really done anything. It was the 2D one though, I want to see if I could do something else. Do I need a modeling program for the 3D?

Yes, For modeling  weapons/items i would suggest MilkShape 3D. For making interiors use either torque constructor or Quark.
For scripting, I would suggest using Notepad++, but just regular Notepad is okay too.
