I think it fakes a virus protection program and tricks you into stuff, like one time my mom was on here and she got this popup some how and it looked like my virus security software and told her we had a lot of viruses but it was fake once I noticed it was in the web browser.

Primarily, yes.

It's a program that somehow gets on your computer. Upon start-up, it opens and scans, claims you have thirty something viruses and you need to buy the program to fix them. It's all fake, it's not a real scanner.
