Author Topic: WTF?! Image background wont go transparent!  (Read 2170 times)

I'm trying to make the background of my avatar transparent. I'm using Photoshop. These are the exact steps I go through:
1. Open the original .jpg file
2. Select all the black areas
3. Copy it onto a new file with a transparent background
4. Save it as a .gif

What am I doing wrong?!?!

Well...

You dont copy it to s trans background.

1. Delete background layer
2. Use magic wand on all the areas to remove
3. Delete those areas
4. Save as .png
5. ???
6. Profit.

The original image is all one layer so there's no transparent background underneath it all and saving it as a .png made it do this...

Then dont delete th background, use the magic wand tool.

Select deleted parts, then hit delete.

Save is as a .png NOT interlaced.

If it doesn't work, then you computer just wants to eat you.

EDIT: If you notice, checkerboard means transparent.

Still not working. Here's a more detailed version of what I do:
1. Open the original .jpg file
2. Select the magic wand tool
3. Make a big circle around everything
4. Select>Color Range>Highlights (all the white areas)
5. Hit delete
6. White areas become black
7. Hit delete again
8. Nothing happens...

*sigh*

1. Use magic wand
2. Use Shift+click to select all areas to be deleted.
3. Press delete
4. Save as .png (no interlace)
5. The end.

You dont need to get technical, its shift, click delete, no highlights stuff.

Ok, basically what I did was a longer version of what you're saying and all it does it make everything black...

Unlock the layer, and change your color pallet so the background color is white.

Is it 75x75 or under?

Because it's becoming a JPG when you're uploading it, which causes it to lose transparency.

What do you need that needs transparency... I'll do it for you.

In order for transparencies to work, the image file must be resized to 75x75. hurr
