Author Topic: Datablock Limit. Why do we have one?  (Read 1693 times)

I'm not even going to answer this properly. Why the hell would anyone need more than 4k datablocks?
When trying to use multiple gamemodes at once (ex: TeamDeathmatch, Zapt, others) The numbers go up quite rapidly.

Why would anyone limit the capabilities of an engine on purpose by limiting the amount of content that can be used? :/
Oh okay. Let's lift all restrictions!

"hey i downloaded all add-ons and now i cant even spawn why is that?
here's console!
---
datablocks: 280000
---"

Oh what if the ghosting limit was removed?

"hey i got a bunch of add-ons and made a big build why does the game lag so much?"

You don't need both TDM and Zapt, because you can't even use the two together.
TDM itself only adds 22.
Siege adds only 5, KOTH adds 5, C&R adds 6, CTF adds 24, AVIP adds 0.

Each brick only adds 1.
Each weapon adds several. Ranging between 8 and over 20.
This means it only takes about 4 weapons to equal TDM and all it's modes, and you don't even need all the modes enabled.

You don't need that many weapons. Lets say you're making some class selection thing. That's about 20 weapons.
That's still only 300 datablocks.

The default game only adds 421 + 7 per color in the colorset.

With only 20 weapons, all gamemodes (TDM related), and a 64 color-set, you're still only at 1209 datablocks.
I wonder how you people even reach the god damn limit.

I enable:

All of my Bricks
All prints
A few vehicles
One GameMode at once
A couple of tools
And I would guess at least 150 weapons. :P

Oh, and most of my music.

Not to mention the tier set, which is like 200 datablocks on its own. (The entire set)

I just dont see why it isnt even adjustable. If I could, my computer would be capable of hosting a server with all of my Add-Ons activated at once. My Add-Ons folder is over 1GB in size.

Also, my computer isn't anything major over-the-top expensive. It cost me $500. It is just inconvenient when I start a server and not all of my Add-Ons load. And then the extremely loving annoying datablock limit notifier comes up every time I spawn. Thats the only reason why I started this topic.

Disable some add-ons.
Oh, yes. Completely restart the server. That's convenient.

worth supporting if it is only in single player, considering how much of a download that 1GB would be.

About 1/5 of the amount it would have with the old DL system.

Why would you ever need this many weapons, especially because barely any of them would be balanced with one another.

Torque was not built with a large modding community in mind. 1024 was reasonable for Tribes 2, and the limit has not been removed because it is simply not worth the effort. 4096 is plenty for anyone who chooses add-ons reasonably based on the server they're hosting.

What the forget is wrong with you?
