Author Topic: Google Sketchup can be used to model?  (Read 2004 times)

Google Sketchup can be used to model; However, in order to bring the models in to blockland you're going to need a "post processing" program like blender or milkshape to add joints and animations.

My personal advice to you is to stray from sketchup. Everyone that I know that's tried it has had serious problems with it as their modeling skills increase. It creates un-needed back-faces and polygons on export, and it doesn't give you much control on scale and normals on export. Leaving you with serous problems when trying to fix it later.

I suggest you use Wings-3D or even Blender it's self to model your creations. Sketch-up may seem easier to use, but it's not nearly as rewarding.

Plus, I disagree with you. Sketchup has a very different way of modeling than any other program. At least Blender and Wings make sense. After using one of those, Sketchup is like poop. But it is good for architecture.

By easier I mean that you can select the pencil tool and draw loving anything. In Blender and even Wings3D.. You have to learn interface.

Alright then, lets see you do this in blender or wings within 30 minutes.

I CAN model with blender, but I prefer SketchUp because I can make much higher quality models in a lot less time.

The only thing it creates extras of are verticies, which is as simple as W, 6 in  edit mode. Ive used Sketch for a long time now and have not had any issues with it that I couldnt easily resolve.

The backfaces, actually, are a result of carelessness. Lots of people color their model before its done; by doing so, you cannot tell whether the faces are facing the correct direction in sketchup. The front of a face in sketchup is a different color than the back, and you can reverse them by just selecting it, right click, and choose "reverse faces".

Simple.
Notice: He has the professional version trial. The only way to export wavefront, 3dstudio, and any other format other than collada and google earth 4.

I have used Sketch Up, and I use the dea. exporter and import it into Blender.
