Please talk to him, and tell him that Dell is all just fancy advertising and relies on gullible customers who think they are really good computers.
They are the worst prebuilt brand.
What is one you would recommend?
I like acers, but my (step)dad has never heard of them..

Really?
He must really have buried his head in the sands of advertising.

HP/Compaq (same brand), and Acer are the best well-known brands, but if you managed to get him to bend to an iBuyPower, you could get a really, really, really epic machine.

I'm going to try to convince him to let me buy on HP.

I like Dell, but that's because I don't buy from them.

If he gave you a $3000 budget, then get an Alien Ware.

From what I've heard, Alienware's are overpriced and die within a short time. But they are great for gaming so yeah.

Wait, are you trying to get a laptop or a desktop?

Didn't you just see the topic?
Dells are stuff. Alienware is run by Dell. Alienware are even more outrageously priced, and really only sell on their looks. They use bad components too.
And, they charge like a hungry bull. It's like $350 to upgrade from 6GB 1333 to 12GB 1333 RAM on their systems. To do that manually, it'd be no more than $50.
http://www.ibuypower.com/

that is all.
While I support this, if you read the topic, his father apparently is a reject.

forget it, just buy a loving Alienware Desktop. Don't give a stuff, use a decent amount of budget, If you can go iBuyPower.

I know they are stuff, but what the forget, get a iBuyPower or MSI laptop.

EDIT: forget Alienware, get MSI.
