parkan II and "the precursors" are your best bet; they allow you to walk around on planets (and in your ship/boarded ships in parkan II), pilot ships, etc, though they have no multiplayer. i haven't played the precursors. parkan II is decent.

x: rebirth (when it comes out sometime in 2012) is also going to allow you to walk around in your ship, but it also has no multiplayer - but it has by the far the best graphics, and the previous games have all had amazing soundtracks.

i've always wanted a multiplayer space game where it takes a lot of people to crew a ship. where it's like star wars where everyone is running around loading the guns, sending out fighters, repairing, or maneuvering. and you can actually walk inside the ship. you could like, command a huge battleship or you and a bunch of guys could command a bunch of small, 3 man ships.
