There are 3 separate sounds and they all rise together at slightly different heights, when one gets too high it drops down and starts rising again from a lower point, but the two others are still rising and that is what you hear so you don't notice when one of them drops down.

Whenever it restarts, I keep hearing it get higher- then it reverts to sounding lower instantly.  Cool effect, but I can't help but ruin it for myself.
