Anyone know why steam is so laggy for me under wine?
That's normal.  Steam isn't coded very well.

rrriiightt...
With Ubuntu (and any other linux OS I tried so far), every system I plug in works with the universal open source drivers.  With Windows, you get the stock MS drivers,  they are okay but have no 3D support.  You have to get the proprietary drivers for 3D.  In Linux it is optional (but still recommended.)

Linux is a box of gears, maybe it won't work out of the box but it'll work.  You just have to make it work.

I use Ubuntu for every computer I have unless I'm planning to use it for gaming. In that case, Windows.
Also, there are apparantly no functional drivers for GForce 9500 GT. D:
Damn, I was going to buy that card a while ago.

dodged a bullet there lol

That's not MORE hardware support, that's EASIER (as in: save you 5 minutes downloading better drivers) hardware support. derpderp.

and then like 2 posts later someone says there's no support for a certain piece of hardware, lol. a common  piece at that, nothing rare about 9500's.

Most stuff also generally runs slower under wine.

True.  I say that Steam is coded poorly because if they mess up TF2 I can only imagine what else they managed to muck up.

Now that I think about it, they're pretty equal.  Because Nvidia and ATi both release their drivers for Linux.  Intel is the only difference but their chipsets suck.

OH GOD XUBUNTU
really i just like XFCE because it's like GNOME and much smaller, perfect for dual-boot PC's. But Xubuntu turned browsing files into a search engine.

I might try out Ubuntu sometime...

Wait, can you use two different operating systems on the same computer, but on diff. Accounts?

I think so.

It's called dual-booting.
Each OS has it's own set of accounts. You choose the OS when you boot the computer.
