Author Topic: A question for anybody who knows anything about subwoofers  (Read 445 times)

Some of you may remember a topic a made awhile ago saying how I was planning on installing a subwoofer system as the next modification to my car. When I made that topic it was just a rough plan but now I'm finally starting to get the parts together. I currently have the subwoofers themselves on the way in shipping.

Next up is the box. I can't just pick any box though. I want a box that still leaves me with a decent amount of trunk space.  I was browsing around and I located this box. Due to its small width it seems perfect for me. Today I used a tape measure and some wooden blocks around the garage to create a rough estimate of what the box would look like in my trunk.

(I filled in black lines to show the outline of the box as well as stuffty circles to show where the subs would face)

As you can see, the box would fit nicely and still give me trunk room. Unfortunately it says this is a Downfire subwoofer box. This means that it is designed so the subs are faced downwards and fire into the carpet. I personally want a design which has the subs facing the rear door of the car as shown in the picture.

So my question is, would I be able to just use the downfire sub box but instead position it so that the subs are facing the rear door. And if so would this affect the sound quality at all.

I don't see why not.
Downfire sounds much deeper and spreads about better though. I don't see why you wouldn't want to do that unless you just want to show off your 'perty boom speakers to everybody.

Maybe room.
Downfires are a lot deeper in sound.
They can use the same speakers, but it's all to do with how the box is designed for airflow and where the ports are and all that stuff.

I actually used a down fire sub setup in my eclipse back in the day, when I rotated them to face the hatchback instead of the floor, the sub quality was greatly reduced. Bass sounds much better when it's going towards the floor, so I highly recommend using it as such.

Also, a recommendation, if you so choose to use them as down fires, make sure you give them about an inch of clearance on the bottom, otherwise you wont be getting the full bass.

Get a 10KW subwoofer and create earthquake.

bonus points of the music played is violent dubstep

Thanks for the input guys. Its seems some of you are knowledgeable on this subject so perhaps you guys can recommend me a good amp. The subs I'm getting are 2 12" Kicker CVRs with dual 4 ohm voice coils. Each sub has a Power handling of 50-400 watts RMS (200 watts per coil) and 800 watts peak power handling.

I'd like to get a kicker amp to match the sub brand. Any suggestions?
