Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.

The wiki is called "TV Tropes" because TV is where we started. Over the course of a few years, our scope has crept out to include other media. Tropes transcend television. They reflect life. Since a lot of art, especially the popular arts, does its best to reflect life, tropes are likely to show up everywhere.

Basically tvtropes is like wikipedia only 100% better than wikipedia. Once you open your first tab, you'll find another thing and open up another tab. Then another thing, and another tab. And another tab. And another tab and another tab

Until either you get bored or your computer locks up.

There's several different tropes for several different things. Still haunted by those scary moments from Courage the Cowardly Dog? So are these tropers. Recently had a stunning realization about a part in bioshock? Here's more.

Or would you like to visit a random trope? You can do that too.

Not much else to talk about. Happy 'troping'!

The curse of hyperlinks. I wind up reading about too many things at once instead of doing what I was supposed to do. It's a fun site though.

I <3 TV Tropes :D

May I suggest reading the Evil Overlord List, Cellblock A and Cellblock B?
There's also a TV Tropes addition to it if you want to read it as well.
