Have you updated your graphics drivers? Also check the status of your graphics card, and watch for any unwanted artifacts, because that may be a sign of your GPU dying. One last thing, your monitor may be dying as well.

Your video card may not support hardware ambient occlusion, how recently was it made?
Are you sure it's not your monitor?

assuming you're running Windows Vista/7:
Hit the Windows key. Type dxdiag. Hit enter. Post screenshots of the General and Display tabs.
