If he know which class it was stolen from, he can just report it to the teacher. What he should have done was that, then the principal could have had the 6th period teachers look through the 5th gym period student's things.

Call the police and tell them to call their phone so they can track it.

phones aren't like ipods
phones not only cost you something every month, but they are often important
what if he needed to call his mother because he got shot on the way home from school, and he didn't have a phone?
what if he witnessed a murder on the other side of the street, how would he call the police?
maybe he would need a phone to orchestrate the drug deal he was about to take part in?

i don't think there is anyway to track it unless you  get a hold of some fbi stuff or something

i googled something like this once when i was younger and i got some weird website where it tricks you and zooms and zooms until it zooms into a bedroom of a couple in bed.
You and legal information do not mix.

Talk to the police about it and they'll contact the cell phone company to attempt to trace it.  How cell phone tracking works would require the thief to make a call with it (as of 2005 or so, I don't know about now) so iunno
