If by took down other countries you mean that the other countries decided it was not in their best interest to fight, then yup.
The Chinese invaded the united Vietnam after they the Vietnamese military crushed the Pol Pot regime. Anyway china expected a conventional war, instead the guerrillas rose up again and fought an unconventional war against them which lead to a high amount of casualties on both sides. So china gave up and left.
