Help with running AoE2

I recently got in the mood to play AoE2, so I went on my computer and started it up. It worked fine, I played for a little bit, then got off.
The next day, I wasn't so lucky. It would begin to load for a few seconds, then the disk would stop spinning. Does anyone know what my problem is? I have Windows 7 and the first time I played I didn't have the 'graphics problem' I read about on other forums.

deactivate visual themes or play via gameranger, gameranger also lets you play online without the LAN stuff that never works

I have Windows 7, not XP.
