Basically you want side scrolling NES style games, i remember i saw a really good one on kongregate where you had to kill aliens and you could upgrade your fighter jet and stuff.

Use the arrow keys to move, hold 'z' to fire, and hold shift to lock your aim direction. When an enemy is killed, touch their falling wreckage to get junk armor, though that only works when you aren't locking your aim direction.
