I think the reality for most people is that your pets are likely to die in hospital, than curled up at the end of your bed or in the garden peacefully. Healthcare lets us prolong animal life, and they ultimately become ill in old age. Same with humans.
Nice to hear you took in otherwise unwanted animals too. We saved our cat days from euthanasia, it started as a kitten but a family gave it up. Was facing death because of major overcrowding of abandoned cats... a terrible reality.
Imo, the first thing people should do is go to an SPCA or seek cats from homes that need to give them up. They aren't angry mangled monsters just because they weren't shipped from a breeder.
There is a cat across the road that has one front leg, not sure of the story. I find it kind of sweet actually. Amazing to see the animal adapt.
