I have the non steam version but apparently you can't play with people on the steam one.
That really grinds my gears.

Honestly the biggest difference that I noticed is that the retail one will freeze combat when one team wins, while the steam one lets you keep running around with the "victory" thing on the screen.

Not really. Maybe only for a second or two, then it freezes you again.
