Author Topic: Linux help?  (Read 698 times)

I've been meaning to try Linux and this new TF2 promo was a good motivator so I decided to install Ubuntu 12.04

Unfortunately I have no idea what I'm doing
I downloaded the 12.04 amd64 .iso and downloaded this tool.
I used the tool on my flash drive and restarted my computer, with the flash drive in. Nothing happened. So I ran the .exe that the tool put in my flash drive.
It ran an installer, I followed the instructions, rebooted, and it booted to ubuntu. From there I tried to install steam and got an error that was something like "libcd:i386". So I rebooted, mashed f9-f12, and it booted into windows this time.

I don't know what I did, but I have two questions:
1. how can i manage my partitions?
2. why can't i install steam?

i'll be back in 5 and try to install again, and get the exact error.

Seems that there is an issue at the moment, the Steam repo is being reported as for the 386 instruction set only.

Oh ok.
In that case, do you know how I can manage my partitions? I feel like I probably forgeted up a bunch of stuff. (i dont even know if that tool set a separate partition for ubuntu, hopefully it did)

There is a package called gparted that you can use for partition management.

doesnt linux installer allow you to create partitions on the fly if you have enough empty space?
also you should prioritize windows in your bios so it boots that automatically if you want to have linux as a secondary os

it asked me how much space i wanted to give linux. i assumed that was the partition but i really don't know much about it.

is that for linux or windows? i'd need a windows one if i'm gonna delete the linux partition, wouldn't i?

run "compmgmt.msc"
youll find partitions under disk management

Do you have Windows V/7/8? If yes, search your Start menu for "manage disks".
