Author Topic: Help Neon EDIT: Fix his god damn laptop  (Read 1517 times)

I am about to come into some considerable money ($200+) and I'm looking at building a decent computer on the cheap. My current laptop has frequent lag spikes attributed to a stuff integrated processor, and I need to start working on a new computer. All I ask is something like 40 or more FPS on a game like Guild Wars 2 or Team Fortress 2 etc. (Nothing like Crysis, calm down). Monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. are not a problem, and I won't need a CD drive either. So can someone help me out with amassing parts and such, as I am hardware illiterate?

i dont think i could build a decent one to game on for less then 500. even then its cutting it very very close.

minimum 600 for anything you can really game on

yeah it's gonna be hard to have a decent computer for 200. save up

I talked to a friend about this earlier, and he said I might be able to scrap together something for around 230, but it would be just a little under what I wanted. If I can't build a new computer, do you think there's any way to upgrade my laptop, considering the processor can't be replaced on it's own?

a processor or video card on their own are about 200 bucks a piece, if you want something that will play todays games and age at least 2 years.

It's a Dell XPS M1530. The processor is saudered to the motherboard and can't be removed cleanly. Or replaced, for that matter.

ask your parents if they're willing to shell out some money for you to build a computer
it sounds really impressive so they might say yes

windows 7 costs like 100 on its own anyway
that leaves only like 100 for the rest
nope not happening

My family is pretty poor. If we had the money on our own to do this, we would, but I'm only getting this money from scrapping it together from my birthday coming up soon.

the only real thing you can actually pretty much upgrade in a laptop is your ram, but that won't give much of performance increase

dont build yet. save the money till you got like 500. then buy a custom prebuilt comp on newegg when they have the deals every now and then for package desktops.

my friend got a computer that should have been about 1000 value for 600 on newegg. they have the deals like weekly.

Good advice. Locking until I have managed to save up enough money.
