What I'm looking for is a 2x2 plate that looks like a regular 2x2 plate but with a disk in the middle:

Couldn't you use a print and use a colorset with invisibles, and color the brick so it only shows the print?
Can easily be done in blender, by clicking add and then adding a plane and a circle.
I'm really bad at modeling though.

unless you're talking about other prints,
prints also go transparent with colorsets
