A harness wouldn't have strangled it as much as a leash would have.
Maybe not at all.
Yeah but what if the dog went like the mutated alien in "Alien: Resurrection"?
i know its impossible

Don't remind me.

lol no. the leash would've broken off before it strangled the dog.
No, it would have pulled the dog up to the top of the door then killed it.

regardless it would've been stuck in the elevator door
The leash can obviously moves through the doors since it can move upwards, so if enough pressure (not that much) were applied to the leash it would easily pull out, granted the owner stopped holding it. Elevator doors aren't that hard to pull open.

are you saying that if the owner let go of the leash then the handle would have slipped out of the elevator door and fell down the shaft dropping the dog?
the handle is thicker than the leash, that's a given
so the leash part pops out of the probably rubber handle and falls down the shaft

You're implying you know what kind of leash the owner is holding

It's clear in the image. The owner has the retractable leash on the dog. Notice the thin wire.

. . . Did you just call that image clear? The leash is not a thin wire, look at the actual non-crappy gif video and you'll see that the leash is a ribbon rope. And really, the leash would probably have broken before the dog would choke because the connector is made of metal and that would have not gone through the doors.
