uh they weren't?

the police tear gassed everybody including news crews 1 mile away from the protests. if you indiscriminately fire tear gas at everyone then they're going to start to all riot (source: army riot control handbook)

there are peaceful protests going on and there are rioters and people breaking stuff

it seems the police are just looking at any group of people and assuming its rioting and tear gassing them and stuff. last night there was a twitter livefeed of a peaceful protest going on and the police decided it'd be a great idea to just arrest all those people. also this morning i was reading that they raided a church where they had medicine and other supplies set out to treat people, the whole mess is a clusterforget really and while i think the police are stuffbags for doing things like that i also understand that this whole ordeal is a mess and that its easy to mistake peaceful protesting for something worse

a news crew isnt a peaceful protest, and like i said the police are stuffbags for doing that. when they tear gassed the al jazeera crew that was total bullstuff

protesters are seperating agitators from the crowd and there are civilians preventing looters from breaking in to stores
