Author Topic: blogland forums: wiped out on my bike today (also bike general)  (Read 619 times)

I feel like something needs to be said here because man alive some bicycle related stuff gets on my nerves sometimes. So today I was riding my bike home after school (I had a bad feeling about it, didn't want to do it that morning either way), and after a while I could feel some sort of really hard object in my helmet digging into my skull, so I took one hand off the handlebars so I could adjust my helmet to see if it was some sort of pebble or maybe a clip that got jammed up in there.

During this, I'm really not sure what the forget happened, I might have drifted slightly to the right or something, but some starfish is suddenly right next to me on his bike, slams into my handlebar, causing my bike to jerk left and throw me off completely. After breaking my fall with my arm on the rough concrete surface, he proceeds to mash my hand under both his wheels and his body which could have easily added up to 250 pounds, before riding off into the loving sunset without so much as a sorry. Didn't ring his bell, didn't shout out or anything, just simply slammed into me while halfway down a straight sidewalk with a good 5ft of space on either side. I think you'd would've had to try to hit me.

As far as injuries go, there were none, had some stuffty scraping on my hands and arms that bled for a bit but don't really hurt much. Arms a little stiff. Could've been much worse if I wasn't wearing a heavy ass school blazer (i should check for rips actually). The thing that is hurting the most right now is my pride because I wiped the forget out in-front of an entire school of my classmates. Now my handlebars are skew and my chain sounds rattled or something but nothing major. At this point I'm just pretty pissed that the dude has the audacity to literally just ride away and pretend like nothing happened.

Discuss bikes and bike accidents. I have this bike that I picked up at the mall a few months ago after I moved. Pretty damn decent bike trails in Australia.

EDIT:
use ur forgetin bell pls

Do you know who the dude was?

ouch dude. that really sucks. hope you get better :(

Do you know who the dude was?

Nope, dude was wearing full on overalls, I'm new in town so the chances of me even recognizing him are slim.

Well, that sucks. maybe... I don't know, there's a lot of self justification that might have happened once he hesitated to say something. Maybe they had just been humiliated or something and needed to get out of there. Try not to just think of them as an starfish (even though that's still a possibility).

I recently learned to ride a bike (at age 22) but there aren't a lot of bike-friendly roads here. Fortunately, so far, I'm too out of shape to feel the need to ride outside my subdivision; using it as a way to exercise and have fun rather than for transportation (I've found I love getting speed using the force of my own body, but also that I really like my Volvo)

Dude Wednesday I went out for a bike ride and it had been raining earlier that day and around a corner was still wet and I wiped out hard. Slammed my hip and shoulder and slid for about ten feet on my knees. Ended up spraining my shoulder and I can't move my right arm much right now.

Something similar happened to me a few weeks ago, I had no ride to school and it was raining, and I had an exam that morning, so I ended up taking my bike. I hooked it up to the bike rack which for some reason is directly under the unblocked sky, so it got rained on for several hours while the exam took place. I didn't really think much of it, but as I sped out of the school grounds, my brakes just wouldn't work. At all. I knew they needed tightening but I hadn't realized that the water would give the brakes less friction, so I ended up busting my nuts down like 18 steps of stairs. Kept it under control and stayed on it but I couldn't sit for like 3 days.

Sounds loving painful dude. You have my sympathies.

I like riding my bike because I'm too lazy to get my licence (mainly because my parents would expect me to pay for insurance + gas and there's really no point in that) and I don't have to depend on people for pick-ups and drop-offs. Australia is really good with bike roads and the like so getting around has been MUCH easier than in Atlanta GA

I got a really nice street bike from my mom. My dad had an Italian racing bike at my age. Pretty jelly.
