I can understand this for bikes that you out grow, but if they are giving/throwing away the bikes that you still use, that's a problem that you should make apparent.

I did sort of outgrow them, but I wasn't too big to ride them at all.

Did you buy it yourself? Do some research, buy your own bike that fits you and buy a bike lock, then lock it up so nobody can throw it away.
