Is aiming in monster hunter 4 supposed to be really hard?

I can play FPS games fine with a keyboard and mouse, but I just can't at all aim with the 3DS.
I'm not sure if I missed something on the control options, the onscreen d-pad is just horrible to use. Super training in the 3ds pokemo  games control just fine I don't get why capcom has to suck.
Are there any alternatives?

There is a lock on option. Stop using the d-pad on the bottom and press L to lock onto a monster. When you see it, the monster's icon should appear on the bottom. Touch that. Now, when you press L, you should be aiming directly at the monster.
