In the technology world, you patent everything. For large companies, their 'arsenal' of patents are like their nukes. Whenever anyone treads in their patents, they get to sick them with a big fine. It's a pretty cancerous abuse of the patent system, I won't be surprised when the law is changed to make patents expire significantly faster.
