Author Topic: BlockLand Glass automatically kicks you from servers if you do not have it  (Read 3435 times)

I updated the add-on.

Alpha 4.2

  • Updated the required client message to include the mod list for non-glass clients, as well as explain that the functionality was enabled by the server host and is not required

Uninstalling Blockland Glass immediately.
Way to jump the gun. Scout31 had already explained why that would not even remotely be the case unless you enabled this feature deliberately.

Yep.

First off, this functionality is only present in the development alpha build of Glass, which is inherently unstable. Secondly, this functionality is only enabled if the server host has specified that they want it to be. Glass 1.1 gives the server host the option to require client add-ons, such as certain client GUIs or mods.

The message literally says "This server uses Blockland Glass to manage client add-ons". Which means what it says. That server, specifically, as in not all Glass servers.
actually thats really clever. can't wait for it to be finished, that would be really useful

the root problem here is that game modes exist that can't be played without client mods

I disagree. Having a built in system (or in this case, hopefully a widely-adopted system) that can automatically take care of client mods would greatly help Blockland. You'd see much more diversity between servers. Imagine joining a Modern Warfare TDM, and it automatically downloads the needed GUI and suddenly you have a full HUD with a radar in the corner and ammo counter? Right now, the only HUD element really used is the bottom print, which got pretty old half a decade ago.

Technically, client mods make the potential of a server to be way better compared to not using any at all. Stuff like fancy UI effects and all.
It would still be nice to have a scapegoat of say, regular prints and such on the screen if the player hadn't had it installed.

Client mods greatly increase the possibilities of what a gamemode can do.

I mean sure, you could just instead load it up with a bunch of slash commands and output everything to the chat but, that's much more work on a client than just having them click a "yes" button to installing a mod when they join.

I already do not like Blockland Glass because you cant upload soundpacks to it, which means like 90% of the addons I make I can't upload.

Its interface on the actual mod manager and website is very poor and has 0 link/image functionality.

Blockland Glass has also caused my game to crash to desktop frequently in the past as well.

And in general it seems like the overhwelming majority of people using it are just scripters who don't care much for artistic/fun content, but functional coder stuff. Which is fine, but its not the right environment for me.

These are just some of the reasons why I do not want to use BL Glass anymore. I didnt jump the gun here. This is merely something that has been ongoing and I am getting tired of it.

The crash-to-desktop bug is the same exact one that plagued RTB and was fixed promptly.

I've said multiple times in many places that sounds are coming, along with the new site that's due to launch in a few weeks.

Mirroring the launch of the new site will be a newly designed in game system which a bigger emphasis on design.

Ideally, if you were one of the people using the development build (note, I included a huge message saying "read what you're getting in to"), you'd actually be up to speed with everything that's happening and being worked on. Please don't blindly install development software in the future if you don't understand what you're doing and aren't willing to be aware of what's going on around you.

i wouldn't really consider those addons but whatever
i wouldn't want to host those either, it'd fall into the same issues music files run into. space may still be a constraint, too, let the addons that actually do something for the game take that space rather than soundpack #173 no one will ever use
