I don't really think the red scare was a bad thing.
After the fact it was proven that yes, communists really had gotten into government positions during the cold war.
Nationalism is a sociopolitical double edged blade, don't argue that it isn't. It's a proponent that brought Germany to the top of the European powers, but turned it into a facist monster. Nationalism can also cause international disputes (ex. The Balkans) which usually blow up into violence. You cannot say that nationalism is the best proponent that causes success and growth, because the only factor that considerably holds that title now and days is economic strength.
A strong authoritarian nationalist country can do great things. They are both extremes of the human condition, able to facilitate humanities greatest triumphs and its darkest cruelty. It's all about how you use it.
